1. Know the Fruit by Its Tree
Matthew 7:15-20 NLT “Beware of false prophets who come disguised as harmless sheep but are really vicious wolves. You can identify them by their fruit, that is, by the way they act. Can you pick grapes from thornbushes, or figs from thistles? A good tree produces good fruit, and a bad tree produces bad fruit. A good tree can’t produce bad fruit, and a bad tree can’t produce good fruit. So every tree that does not produce good fruit is chopped down and thrown into the fire. Yes, just as you can identify a tree by its fruit, so you can identify people by their actions.
What is this "fruit"? It's not just their outward appearance or eloquent words. It's the long-term evidence of their life and teaching. Do their lives reflect holiness, humility, and love? Does their message produce repentance, faith, and good works in others?
2. Test Their Prophecies
Deuteronomy 18:20-22 NIV But a prophet who presumes to speak in my name anything I have not commanded, or a prophet who speaks in the name of other gods, is to be put to death.” You may say to yourselves, “How can we know when a message has not been spoken by the Lord?” If what a prophet proclaims in the name of the Lord does not take place or come true, that is a message the Lord has not spoken. That prophet has spoken presumptuously, so do not be alarmed. (emphasis mine)
The Old Testament provides a straightforward rule for prophets: if what they prophesy does not come to pass, they are not speaking from the Lord. This is a weighty reminder that God’s Word is absolute truth, and His true prophets will be accurate. While this Old Testament penalty is no longer applicable, the principle remains: true prophecy aligns with reality and God's sovereign plan.
3. Compare Their Teaching to Scripture
2 Timothy 3:16-17 NLT All Scripture is inspired by God and is useful to teach us what is true and to make us realize what is wrong in our lives. It corrects us when we are wrong and teaches us to do what is right. God uses it to prepare and equip his people to do every good work. (emphasis mine)
The ultimate safeguard against deception is a deep knowledge of the Bible.
False teachers often twist scripture or present new "revelations" that contradict the established Word. If a teaching doesn’t align with the entirety of the Bible, it should be rejected. Our foundation is Christ and His written Word; everything else must be measured against it.
4. Discern Their Message and Focus
Galatians 1:8-9 NLT Let God’s curse fall on anyone, including us or even an angel from heaven, who preaches a different kind of Good News than the one we preached to you. I say again what we have said before: If anyone preaches any other Good News than the one you welcomed, let that person be cursed.
This reminds us that the core message of the gospel—salvation through Jesus Christ alone—is non-negotiable. False teachers deny the divinity of Jesus, often introduce a different gospel, one that might add works for salvation, downplay sin, or elevate personal experience above Christ’s finished work on the cross. Be wary of any message that takes the focus off of Jesus and His divinity.
5. Listen to the Holy Spirit
1 John 4:1-3 NLT Dear friends, do not believe everyone who claims to speak by the Spirit. You must test them to see if the spirit they have comes from God. For there are many false prophets in the world. This is how we know if they have the Spirit of God: If a person claiming to be a prophet acknowledges that Jesus Christ came in a real body, that person has the Spirit of God. But if someone claims to be a prophet and does not acknowledge the truth about Jesus, that person is not from God. Such a person has the spirit of the Antichrist, which you heard is coming into the world and indeed is already here.
As believers, we have the Holy Spirit dwelling within us, guiding us into all truth. Cultivating a close relationship with God through prayer and scripture allows us to sharpen our spiritual discernment. When a message feels "off," trust that internal warning and turn to the Lord for confirmation.
In a world full of noise, let us anchor ourselves in the unchanging truth of God's Word. By consistently testing every teaching against scripture, seeking the guidance of the Holy Spirit, and observing the "fruit" of those who teach, we can confidently walk in God’s truth and avoid the snares of false prophets.
