But there is a common, subtle misunderstanding: that because we are saved by grace, our actions—our choices and our sins—somehow become irrelevant. We might think that grace acts as a kind of cosmic eraser, eliminating all consequences. It is essential to understand that grace doesn’t excuse sin.
The Purpose of Grace
If grace isn't a license to sin without consequence, what is it?
Grace isn't a passive covering; it is an active, transforming power. Grace is God’s presence to do what only He can do, through Christ’s finished work on the cross.
Romans 6:1-2 NLT [1] Well then, should we keep on sinning so that God can show us more and more of his wonderful grace? [2] Of course not! Since we have died to sin, how can we continue to live in it? (emphasis mine)
The cross forgives the penalty of sin—eternal death—but it does not abolish the natural, earthly consequences of our choices. Grace saves our soul, but unwise decisions can still impact our finances, our health, our relationships, and our testimony. A forgiven thief is free in Christ, but still must repair the broken trust of those they wronged.
Numbers 5:6-7 NLT [6] “Give the following instructions to the people of Israel: If any of the people—men or women—betray the Lord by doing wrong to another person, they are guilty. [7] They must confess their sin and make full restitution for what they have done, adding an additional 20 percent and returning it to the person who was wronged.
Luke 19:8 NLT Meanwhile, Zacchaeus stood before the Lord and said, “I will give half my wealth to the poor, Lord, and if I have cheated people on their taxes, I will give them back four times as much!”
Ephesians 4:28 NLT If you are a thief, quit stealing. Instead, use your hands for good hard work, and then give generously to others in need.
Grace Empowers Righteousness
The power of grace lies in its ability to change us from the inside out. It's not just a declaration of innocence; it's an enablement for a new life. Grace empowers righteousness.
When we receive Christ, the Holy Spirit works within us, giving us the desire and the strength to turn away from sin and toward Godly living. Grace is the power that helps us walk in the alignment with God's will.
Titus 2:11-14 NLT [11] For the grace of God has been revealed, bringing salvation to all people. [12] And we are instructed to turn from godless living and sinful pleasures. We should live in this evil world with wisdom, righteousness, and devotion to God, [13] while we look forward with hope to that wonderful day when the glory of our great God and Savior, Jesus Christ, will be revealed. [14] He gave his life to free us from every kind of sin, to cleanse us, and to make us his very own people, totally committed to doing good deeds.
Understanding this balance is key to maturity. We accept God’s grace for our salvation, and we lean on God’s grace for the power to navigate life and make good choices, knowing that even when we stumble, He provides the strength to rise again. Grace is the foundation of our faith, not an excuse for carelessness.
