So, as believers committed to the continuous process of aligning our lives with God's will, what should be the consistent source of our rejoicing and celebration across these three distinct holidays?
The answer is God’s Complete Provision, seen through His presence, His gift, and His faithfulness.
1. The Celebration of Thanksgiving: Rejoicing in Present Provision
Thanksgiving sets the stage for genuine Christian celebration. Our rejoicing here is rooted in acknowledging God’s sovereignty and grace in our current lives. It calls us to shift our focus from what we lack to what we have been abundantly given, recognizing that every good and perfect gift comes from above.
James 1:16-17 NIV [16] Don’t be deceived, my dear brothers and sisters. [17] Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights, who does not change like shifting shadows.
This is a proactive choice to anchor our hearts in gratitude, which prepares us to receive the deeper truths of Christmas.
1 Thessalonians 5:16-18 NIV [16] Rejoice always, [17] pray continually, [18] give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.
2. The Celebration of Christmas: Rejoicing in God's Ultimate Gift
The secular pressure of Christmas can distract us, but the true Christian focus remains fixed on the Incarnation. Our joy is not found in the fleeting happiness of gifts or decorations, but in thel truth that God became flesh (Immanuel), saving us from our sins and bridging the gap between humanity and divinity.
This is the cornerstone of our faith and the greatest reason for perpetual celebration.
Isaiah 9:6 NIV For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders. And he will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.
John 1:14 NIV The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the one and only Son, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth.
3. The Celebration of the New Year: Rejoicing in Future Hope
As we cross the threshold into a new year, our celebration shifts from past gifts to future hope. The New Year is a time of self-reflection and realignment, perfectly suited to our continuous goal of openness to God’s guidance. Our rejoicing is in the promise that God is already in the future, preparing a path for us, and that our relationship with Him is the eternal constant in a world of change.
We rejoice not in resolutions, but in the God who gives us strength for the journey ahead and whose mercies are new every morning.
Lamentations 3:22-24 NIV [22] Because of the Lord’s great love we are not consumed, for his compassions never fail. [23] They are new every morning; great is your faithfulness. [24] I say to myself, “The Lord is my portion; therefore I will wait for him.”
A Three-Part Call to Faith
Let us use this season not for quick fixes, but for the continuous work of faith:
- Thanksgiving: Stop and genuinely give thanks for the Present Provision that sustains your life.
- Christmas: Center your heart on the Ultimate Gift of Christ and the reality of Immanuel.
- New Year: Trust in the Future Hope God provides, aligning your goals with His guidance for the journey ahead.
