But what happens when we get it? For a fleeting moment, there's a sense of accomplishment, maybe even joy. But soon, that feeling fades. The new car scent wears off. The initial excitement about the promotion wanes. The bigger house suddenly feels normal. Then that nagging feeling of something missing starts to creep back in. It's like drinking water and feeling thirsty again minutes later.
The truth is, this world is designed to keep us searching, striving, and, feeling unfulfilled. Here’s what the prophet Jeremiah said.
Jeremiah 2:13 NLT “For my people have done two evil things: They have abandoned me— the fountain of living water. And they have dug for themselves cracked cisterns that can hold no water at all!
We turn away from God, the very source of true and lasting satisfaction and instead, try to build our own sources of happiness. We dig wells in the desert, hoping they'll provide a refreshing drink, but the wells that we dig are cracked and empty, unable to hold the very thing we desperately need.
The World's Water vs. Jesus' Living Water
Jesus addressed this very human desire in his conversation with the Samaritan woman at the well.
John 4:13-14 NLT [13] Jesus replied, “Anyone who drinks this water will soon become thirsty again. [14] But those who drink the water I give will never be thirsty again. It becomes a fresh, bubbling spring within them, giving them eternal life.”
Think about that for a moment. The "water" of this world with its fleeting pleasures, its material possessions, its superficial achievements, will never truly satisfy. This water offers temporary relief, but the thirst always returns, usually stronger than before. We upgrade, we acquire, we strive, and yet, the longing for more remains.
Think about the relentless cycle of sin. We give in to anger, thinking it will make us feel powerful, but it leaves us with guilt and broken relationships. We indulge in pornography, seeking a moment of escape, but it creates a deeper craving and leaves us feeling empty and ashamed. Every pursuit outside of Jesus ultimately leads to a greater thirst.
The Only Source That Truly Quenches Our Thirst
But Jesus offers something radically different, He offers us living water. This isn't a temporary fix; it's a permanent transformation. When we turn to Him, He becomes a spring within us, a continuous source of life, joy, and true satisfaction that never runs dry. This isn't just about escaping earthly thirst, it's about receiving eternal life, a deep and abiding contentment that transcends our circumstances.
John 10:10 NLT The thief’s purpose is to steal and kill and destroy. My purpose is to give them a rich and satisfying life.
If you find yourself constantly searching for something more, if that nagging feeling of dissatisfaction just won't go away, know this then you are probably spiritually thirsty, and the only one who can truly quench that thirst is Jesus Christ.
He isn't hiding or playing hard to get. He's standing by the well, offering you a drink of living water. He's eager to fill the void in your heart that only He can fill. The invitation is open. The choice is yours.
