When we feel ourselves slipping into that space, it’s usually a sign that our foundation needs a little tending. We often treat peace like a "quick fix" we can grab on the go, but the reality is that staying standing in the heat of battle is a continuous process of alignment.
The Truth That Sets the Pace
We aren’t just called to "survive" the hard days; we’re called to remain.
John 8:31-32 NLT[31] Jesus said to the people who believed in him, “You are truly my disciples if you remain faithful to my teachings. [32] And you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.” (remain)
Freedom doesn’t mean the battle stops; it means the lies of the battle no longer have the power to trip us up. The truth is that even when you feel backed into a corner, God hasn’t moved. He is the God who goes with you. He doesn't just watch from the sidelines; He’s in the trenches.
Deuteronomy 31:6 NLT So be strong and courageous! Do not be afraid and do not panic before them. For the Lord your God will personally go ahead of you. He will neither fail you nor abandon you.
Expecting the Weariness, Choosing the Rest
Let’s be real: life is a lot. Between parenting, work, relationships, and the general "noise" of the world, it’s easy to get drained dry. Scripture never promised us a shortcut around the struggle—Jesus was pretty upfront about the fact that we’d face tribulation.
John 16:33 NLT I have told you all this so that you may have peace in me. Here on earth you will have many trials and sorrows. But take heart, because I have overcome the world.
But He also gave us an invitation that we often forget to RSVP to:
- The Exchange: Come to Him when you're heavy-laden, and He’ll give you rest.
Matthew 11:28-30 NLT Then Jesus said, “Come to me, all of you who are weary and carry heavy burdens, and I will give you rest. [29] Take my yoke upon you. Let me teach you, because I am humble and gentle at heart, and you will find rest for your souls. [30] For my yoke is easy to bear, and the burden I give you is light.”
- The Power Source: The joy of the Lord isn't just a happy feeling; it is literally your strength.
Nehemiah 8:10 NLT And Nehemiah continued, “Go and celebrate with a feast of rich foods and sweet drinks, and share gifts of food with people who have nothing prepared. This is a sacred day before our Lord. Don’t be dejected and sad, for the joy of the Lord is your strength!
The battle isn't something we have to win by white-knuckling our way through it. It’s the Lord’s.
2 Chronicles 20:15 NIV He said: “Listen, King Jehoshaphat and all who live in Judah and Jerusalem! This is what the Lord says to you: ‘Do not be afraid or discouraged because of this vast army. For the battle is not yours, but God’s.
We Weren't Meant to Stand Alone
None of us are immune to the "I just can't anymore" moments. Even Moses—the guy who saw the Red Sea part—got tired. We see him sitting on a stone while Aaron and Hur literally held his hands up because he couldn't do it himself anymore.
Exodus 17:8-13 NIV
[8] The Amalekites came and attacked the Israelites at Rephidim. [9] Moses said to Joshua, “Choose some of our men and go out to fight the Amalekites. Tomorrow I will stand on top of the hill with the staff of God in my hands.” [10] So Joshua fought the Amalekites as Moses had ordered, and Moses, Aaron and Hur went to the top of the hill. [11] As long as Moses held up his hands, the Israelites were winning, but whenever he lowered his hands, the Amalekites were winning. [12] When Moses’ hands grew tired, they took a stone and put it under him and he sat on it. Aaron and Hur held his hands up—one on one side, one on the other—so that his hands remained steady till sunset. [13] So Joshua overcame the Amalekite army with the sword. (emphasis mine)
This is the law of Christ in action: bearing one another’s burdens.
Galatians 6:2 NIV Carry each other’s burdens, and in this way you will fulfill the law of Christ.
We are a community of battle-weary souls meant to support each other. Maybe today that looks like:
- Sending a "thinking of you" text.
- Buying a coffee for a friend who looks weary.
- Specifically praying for someone and—this is the key--telling them you did.
We are each other’s Aaron and Hur. When we help a fellow believer hold up their hands, we are all reminded that The Lord Is My Banner.
Exodus 17:15 NIV Moses built an altar and called it The Lord is my Banner.
A Prayer for the Weary Warrior
Dear God,
The battle feels loud today. We feel the weariness in our bones and the struggle in our spirits. Please forgive us for the times we’ve tried to fight in our own strength or forgotten to check our foundation. Remind us that the enemy only fights this hard because he knows the good You have in store for us. Fill us with Your Holy Spirit. Give us the wisdom to discern Your voice above the noise and the joy to fuel our endurance. We lift our hands to You, our Refuge and our Strength. Go before us today and give us rest.
In Jesus’ name, Amen.
