The Power of a Living Example
We see this choice being made right now by the family of Savannah Guthrie. In the wake of the heart-wrenching kidnapping of her 84-year-old mother, Nancy Guthrie, the world has watched a family navigate an unthinkable injustice. Instead of retreating into private bitterness, the Guthrie family has modeled incredible resilience. Through public pleas for prayer and a steadfast reliance on God, they have turned a "darkest valley" into a platform. They aren't just enduring a trial; they are showing the world that even in an hour of desperation, their faith is an anchor that does not slip. Their resilience serves as a modern-day testimony to the power of a faith that "considers it pure joy" not because the situation is good, but because the God they serve is.
James 1:2-8 NIV Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance. Let perseverance finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything. If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to you. But when you ask, you must believe and not doubt, because the one who doubts is like a wave of the sea, blown and tossed by the wind. That person should not expect to receive anything from the Lord. Such a person is double-minded and unstable in all they do. (emphasis mine)
Consider how God be giving you a similar opportunity to reach people you otherwise would not have met?
1. A New Audience in Unfamiliar Territory
Trials often pull us out of our comfortable routines, thrusting us into environments we never anticipated—legal offices, medical waiting rooms, or support groups. These are places where people are vulnerable and searching for hope. Like the Guthrie family reaching investigators and a global audience with their message of prayer, you become a beacon of light in a place that might otherwise be shrouded in despair.
2. Authenticity Born from Adversity
When you are going through a trial, your faith is being lived out in real-time under pressure. People are watching how you respond. Your trial becomes the perfect setup for someone to ask about your hope because they see it holding firm against the wind.
1 Peter 3:15 NIV But in your hearts revere Christ as Lord. Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have. But do this with gentleness and respect.
3. Empathy as a Bridge
When you endure an unjust trial, you gain a deeper empathy for others who are also suffering. This shared experience can build bridges to conversations that would otherwise remain closed. You can say, "I understand what it's like to feel wronged," and your words carry the weight of personal experience, allowing you to share the comfort you have received from God.
2 Corinthians 1:3-4 NIV Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of compassion and the God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our troubles, so that we can comfort those in any trouble with the comfort we ourselves receive from God.
4. The Advance of the Gospel
Consider the apostle Paul, who found himself in unjust imprisonment yet wrote letters that changed history.
Philippians 1:12-14 NIV Now I want you to know, brothers and sisters, that what has happened to me has actually served to advance the gospel. As a result, it has become clear throughout the whole palace guard and to everyone else that I am in chains for Christ. And because of my chains, most of the brothers and sisters have become confident in the Lord and dare all the more to proclaim the gospel without fear.
Paul is an example but your story, specifically how you navigate injustice with grace, is a powerful demonstration of the gospel's transformative power.
Ultimately, an unjust trial is a profound opportunity to share the unwavering hope found in Jesus. It’s a chance to show the world that even when circumstances are unfair, God is faithful. Take advantage of every opportunity to share the faith you have, for it is often in our weakest moments that His strength is most perfectly displayed.
