Today, we find ourselves navigating a new kind of chaos. The headlines are filled with political violence, deep social divisions, and economic uncertainty. It can feel like the ground is shifting beneath our feet, but the lessons we learned from 9/11 are as relevant now as they were then. We can apply the same steps to find our footing and serve as a light in the storm.
1. Put Your Trust in God
The 9/11 attacks shattered our illusion of control. We reacted with fear until we were reminded that God has ultimate authority over our lives. He is not surprised by the turmoil we see today. We can release our own agendas and take up His, trusting that His purpose will prevail.
Proverbs 19:21 NIV "Many are the plans in a person’s heart, but it is the Lord’s purpose that prevails."
Romans 12:2 NIV "Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will."
Just as faith helped us navigate the chaos of 9/11, it can be our guiding light today. While a "return to normal" may not look like it once did, we can adapt to a new normal with faith as our foundation.
2. Make Worship a Priority
Watching those strong buildings crumble on 9/11 made the world feel small and shaky. Today, as we witness deep political divisions and social unrest, it's easy to feel unnerved. But God, not the world, is our source of strength. He is greater than any created thing and will never leave us. Worship is a powerful way to remember His power and presence in our lives. By making it a daily habit, we shift our focus from our problems to His greatness.
1 Corinthians 10:31 NIV "So whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God."
1 Chronicles 16:28-29 NIV "Ascribe to the Lord, all you families of nations, ascribe to the Lord glory and strength. Ascribe to the Lord the glory due his name; bring an offering and come before him. Worship the Lord in the splendor of his holiness."
3. Seek Opportunities to Serve Others
The first responders who ran into danger on 9/11 showed us what selfless love looks like. Today, we see that same spirit in ordinary people serving on the front lines, and it should inspire us to look beyond ourselves. Whether it's showing kindness to a neighbor, volunteering in your community, or simply speaking a word of encouragement, every act of selfless love reflects God's heart.
John 13:34-35 NIV "A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another."
1 John 3:18 NIV "Dear children, let us not love with words or speech but with actions and in truth."
4. Ask God to Renew Your Attitudes
The horrific actions of the 9/11 attackers were born from destructive ideologies. Today, wrong attitudes and unwholesome talk can also lead to destructive actions, whether in the form of political animosity, social judgment, or personal conflict. We need to ask God to renew our minds and refine our hearts, so we can respond with grace, not anger.
Ephesians 4:29 NIV "Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen."
Philippians 2:3-4 NIV "Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves, not looking to your own interests but each of you to the interests of the others."
5. Lean on God’s Promises
The darkness surrounding 9/11 drove many people to churches and scripture, seeking comfort and hope. Today, facing new storms, we can find that same solace in God’s Word. The Bible is filled with promises that speak to our fears and anxieties. We can find strength in knowing that God will uphold us, provide for our needs, and give us His peace.
Isaiah 41:10 NIV "So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand."
John 14:27 NIV "Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid."
Though the issues we face today are different from those of 9/11, God is the same. He comforted us then, and He offers the same comfort now. As we lean on His promises, He not only helps us through our own storms but gives us the opportunity to help others through theirs.
Hebrews 13:8 NIV "Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever."
2 Corinthians 1:3-4 NIV "Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of compassion and the God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our troubles, so that we can comfort those in any trouble with the comfort we ourselves receive from God."
In today's world of political chaos and social division, it's easy to feel overwhelmed. But as I reflected on the lessons from 9/11, I found a powerful parallel. The same faith that helped us navigate that national trauma can guide us through today's challenges.
