But the reality of a life of faith is often the opposite. Faith doesn't shield you from the presence of the storm; it strengthens you to stand in the center of it without breaking.
Walking Through the Fire
Right now, we see this agonizing truth unfolding in real-time. We see it in the Guthrie family, as Savannah and her siblings navigate the desperate, heart-wrenching search for their mother, Nancy. Although I disagree with almost everything Charlie Kirk said and did and supported, I saw it in strength of Erika Kirk, who, in the wake of her husband Charlie’s assassination, stood before the world not in a shield of safety, but in supernatural strength—even finding the grace to offer forgiveness.
I’m reminded of the families of Mother Emanuel Nine, who faced the unthinkable. They weren't shielded from the bullets of hate, but they were strengthened by a faith that refused to let hate have the final word. I’ve seen and know others, not nearly as well know as these, who have faced terrible tragedies done to them or their families by others, who have chosen to forgive and not hate, These are not stories of people who avoided pain; they are stories of people whose faith kept them upright when the world tried to tear them down.
Shoes of Preparation
When we talk about the "Armor of God," we often focus on the shield,
Ephesians 6:16 NIV In addition to all this, take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one.
But we must look at our feet too.
Ephesians 6:15 NIV and with your feet fitted with the readiness that comes from the gospel of peace.
In the Roman era, when the Apostle wrote his letter to the Christians in Ephesus, a soldier's "caligae" (sandals) were studded with iron nails to provide a firm grip on treacherous terrain. They weren't designed for retreat; they were designed for standing your ground. This isn't about the peace of a quiet lake; it’s about the "readiness" or "preparation" that the Gospel provides. It means that when the ground beneath you shakes—when news of a missing loved one or a tragedy strikes—your feet are anchored. You aren't sliding because you are standing on the solid ground of God’s peace.
James 1:2-4 NIV Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance. Let perseverance finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything.
Isaiah 41:10 NIV So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.
John 16:33 NIV “I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.”
2 Corinthians 12:9-10 NIV But he said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” Therefore I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ’s power may rest on me. That is why, for Christ’s sake, I delight in weaknesses, in insults, in hardships, in persecutions, in difficulties. For when I am weak, then I am strong.
The Firm Footing
Aligning our priorities with God's will means accepting that the "valley of the shadow of death" is still a path we must walk, but at the end of the path is a banquet in your honor.
Psalms 23:1-6 NIV The Lord is my shepherd, I lack nothing. He makes me lie down in green pastures, he leads me beside quiet waters, he refreshes my soul. He guides me along the right paths for his name’s sake. Even though I walk through the darkest valley, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me. You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies. You anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows. Surely your goodness and love will follow me all the days of my life, and I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever.
Your faith isn't a guarantee of a comfortable life; it is the guarantee of an unbreakable spirit and feet that will not slip. We find our strength not in the absence of the trial, but in the presence of the One who walks through it with us.
Daniel 3:24-25 NKJV Then King Nebuchadnezzar was astonished; and he rose in haste and spoke, saying to his counselors, “Did we not cast three men bound into the midst of the fire?” They answered and said to the king, “True, O king.” “Look!” he answered, “I see four men loose, walking in the midst of the fire; and they are not hurt, and the form of the fourth is like the Son of God.” (emphasis mine)
