Think of the Apostle Paul. His life was a testament to unwavering dedication despite facing imprisonment, beatings, and constant opposition. When in his final trial he wrote this to Timothy.
2 Timothy 4:16-18 NIV [16] At my first defense, no one came to my support, but everyone deserted me. May it not be held against them. [17] But the Lord stood at my side and gave me strength, so that through me the message might be fully proclaimed and all the Gentiles might hear it. And I was delivered from the lion’s mouth. [18] The Lord will rescue me from every evil attack and will bring me safely to his heavenly kingdom. To him be glory for ever and ever. Amen. (emphasis mine)
Paul's experience reminds us that even in the face of complete abandonment and fierce opposition, God's strength prevails. The negativity of others could not silence his powerful witness, and don’t let it silence you either.
Consider also the words of Jesus in the Sermon on the Mount
Matthew 5:14-16 NIV [14] “You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden. [15] Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. [16] In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.
Jesus doesn't give us an "if" clause here. He doesn't say, "Let your light shine if everyone is supportive." He commands us to be the light. Our work for the Kingdom, our acts of service, and the way we live out our faith are meant to be beacons, drawing others to God. Negativity might try to dim that light, to cover it up, but we must resist. Don’t let negativity dim or snuff out your light
Here are a few truths to hold onto when negativity threatens to derail your witness and work:
Your value comes from God, not people.
Criticism and negativity often stem from misunderstanding, jealousy, or even their own internal struggles. Don't let their opinions define your worth or the validity of your calling.
Galatians 1:10 NIV [10] Am I now trying to win the approval of human beings, or of God? Or am I trying to please people? If I were still trying to please people, I would not be a servant of Christ.
Keep your eyes fixed on Jesus. His approval is the ultimate reward. When doubts creep in because of negative feedback, turn to prayer and scripture. Remember why you started and who you are ultimately serving.
Hebrews 12:1-3 NIV [1] Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles. And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us, [2] fixing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith. For the joy set before him he endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God. [3] Consider him who endured such opposition from sinners, so that you will not grow weary and lose heart. (emphasis mine)
Don't let bitterness take root.
Negativity can be contagious. Don't allow the negativity of others to breed bitterness or resentment in your own heart. Instead, respond with grace and love, even when it's difficult.
Ephesians 4:29-32 NIV [29] Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen. [30] And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, with whom you were sealed for the day of redemption. [31] Get rid of all bitterness, rage and anger, brawling and slander, along with every form of malice. [32] Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you. (emphasis mine)
Romans 12:17-19 NIV [17] Do not repay anyone evil for evil. Be careful to do what is right in the eyes of everyone. [18] If it is possible, as far as it depends on you, live at peace with everyone. [19] Do not take revenge, my dear friends, but leave room for God’s wrath, for it is written: “It is mine to avenge; I will repay,” says the Lord. (emphasis mine)
Remember the impact of your obedience.
You may not always see the fruit of your labor or the impact of your witness. But trust that God is at work, even when it's unseen. Your faithfulness, despite the negativity, can be a powerful testimony in itself.
1 Corinthians 15:58 NIV Therefore, my dear brothers and sisters, stand firm. Let nothing move you. Always give yourselves fully to the work of the Lord, because you know that your labor in the Lord is not in vain.
The enemy would love nothing more than to silence the voices that proclaim God's love and hinder the work of His Kingdom. Don't give him that victory. Clothe yourselves in the armor of God, stand firm in your faith, and let your light shine brightly.
Ephesians 6:10-18 NIV [10] Finally, be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power. [11] Put on the full armor of God, so that you can take your stand against the devil’s schemes. [12] For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms. [13] Therefore put on the full armor of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand. [14] Stand firm then, with the belt of truth buckled around your waist, with the breastplate of righteousness in place, [15] and with your feet fitted with the readiness that comes from the gospel of peace. [16] In addition to all this, take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one. [17] Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God. [18] And pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests. With this in mind, be alert and always keep on praying for all the Lord’s people.
The world needs your witness, and God will equip you to overcome every obstacle, including the negativity that comes your way. Keep going, keep serving, and keep shining for Him.
