Every year around the Fourth of July, we gather with friends and family to celebrate the signing of the Declaration of Independence. We look back to the brave individuals who declared that all people are "endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness." We are deeply blessed to live in a nation that values and protects these rights.
But for those of us who have accepted Jesus Christ as our Lord and Savior, we have become citizens of a different Kingdom. And because of that, we celebrate a much greater Independence Day.
Our spiritual Independence Day is the day of our salvation. Here is our Our eternal Declaration of Independence:
Romans 10:9 NIV If you declare with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.
If you believe that you have never been in bondgage to anyone. Here’s news for you:
John 8:34-36 NIV [34] Jesus replied, “Very truly I tell you, everyone who sins is a slave to sin. [35] Now a slave has no permanent place in the family, but a son belongs to it forever. [36] So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed.
As we contemplate the freedoms we enjoy on earth, let’s look at four powerful dimensions of the freedom we are given in Christ—and how we can walk in true spiritual independence every day.
1. The Freedom to Speak Our Convictions
In many places around the world, openly sharing your faith or speaking the name of Jesus can lead to arrest, imprisonment, or even death. We must never take for granted our freedom of speech—especially when it comes to the Gospel.
Because we have the freedom to speak, we carry a unique responsibility to fulfill the Great Commission.
Matthew 28:19-20 NIV [19] Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, [20] and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.”
For us, "all nations" might look like our neighborhoods, our friend groups, or our workplaces. With the guidance of the Holy Spirit, we can use our voices boldly and wisely to share Christ’s love with those around us.
2. The Freedom to Worship as We Choose
Worship is both a privilege and a biblical command. God created us for fellowship with Him and with one another.
Hebrews 10:23-25 NIV [23] Let us hold unswervingly to the hope we profess, for he who promised is faithful. [24] And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds, [25] not giving up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but encouraging one another—and all the more as you see the Day approaching.
Because we are receiving a "kingdom which cannot be shaken," we have the freedom to gather openly, praise God with reverence, and build up the body of Christ without fear.
Hebrews 12:28-29 NIV [28] Therefore, since we are receiving a kingdom that cannot be shaken, let us be thankful, and so worship God acceptably with reverence and awe, [29] for our “God is a consuming fire.” (emphasis mine)

3. The Freedom to Pray Boldly
Through Jesus, our relationship with God is not distant or restricted. We can approach the Creator of the universe with ultimate confidence and freedom.
Hebrews 4:14-16 NIV [14] Therefore, since we have a great high priest who has ascended into heaven, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold firmly to the faith we profess. [15] For we do not have a high priest who is unable to empathize with our weaknesses, but we have one who has been tempted in every way, just as we are—yet he did not sin. [16] Let us then approach God’s throne of grace with confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need. (emphasis mine)
God’s will is for us to live a life connected to Him through prayer. When we choose to submit our requests to Him—obeying the call to "pray continually" we are actively living out our faith.
1 Thessalonians 5:16-18 NIV [16] Rejoice always, [17] pray continually, [18] give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.
True freedom means trusting in the Lord with all our hearts rather than leaning on our own limited understanding.
Proverbs 3:5-6 NIV [5] Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; [6] in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight.
4. The Freedom to Live for God
While the American Declaration of Independence emphasizes the "pursuit of happiness," the Bible shows us a better way. We don't have to endlessly chase happiness; instead, we can experience lasting joy by walking in the Holy Spirit.
Galatians 5:22-23 NIV [22] But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, [23] gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law.
When we are set free in Christ, we are empowered to look past our own selfish desires and truly serve one another in love. We are even given the supernatural freedom to love our enemies, bless those who curse us, and pray for those who mistreat us.
Matthew 5:43-48 NIV [43] “You have heard that it was said, ‘Love your neighbor and hate your enemy.’ [44] But I tell you, love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, [45] that you may be children of your Father in heaven. He causes his sun to rise on the evil and the good, and sends rain on the righteous and the unrighteous. [46] If you love those who love you, what reward will you get? Are not even the tax collectors doing that? [47] And if you greet only your own people, what are you doing more than others? Do not even pagans do that? [48] Be perfect, therefore, as your heavenly Father is perfect.
Staying Vigilant in Your Freedom
When you were set free from sin, you became a "slave to righteousness"—meaning your life was realigned with God's perfect will and purpose.
Romans 6:15-18 NIV [15] What then? Shall we sin because we are not under the law but under grace? By no means! [16] Don’t you know that when you offer yourselves to someone as obedient slaves, you are slaves of the one you obey—whether you are slaves to sin, which leads to death, or to obedience, which leads to righteousness? [17] But thanks be to God that, though you used to be slaves to sin, you have come to obey from your heart the pattern of teaching that has now claimed your allegiance. [18] You have been set free from sin and have become slaves to righteousness. (emphasis mine)
The old things have passed away, and you have become a brand new creation.
2 Corinthians 5:16-17 NIV [16] So from now on we regard no one from a worldly point of view. Though we once regarded Christ in this way, we do so no longer. [17] Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: The old has gone, the new is here! (emphasis mine)
However, being free from the slavery of sin does not mean we will never struggle with the flesh. The enemy will still throw fiery darts at our minds, our bodies, and our lives. But Christ has already won the battle and equipped us with the ultimate defense:
Ephesians 6:10-17 NIV [10] Finally, be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power. [11] Put on the full armor of God, so that you can take your stand against the devil’s schemes. [12] For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms. [13] Therefore put on the full armor of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand. [14] Stand firm then, with the belt of truth buckled around your waist, with the breastplate of righteousness in place, [15] and with your feet fitted with the readiness that comes from the gospel of peace. [16] In addition to all this, take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one. [17] Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.
Because of this armor, you have the spiritual authority to say NO to the enemy.
Galatians 5:1 NIV It is for freedom that Christ has set us free. Stand firm, then, and do not let yourselves be burdened again by a yoke of slavery.
Your spiritual freedom cannot be stolen from you, but it can be abandoned. If we stop letting the Holy Spirit control our lives and try to take the reins back ourselves, we lose our joy and peace. We don't lose our salvation, but we willingly walk back into the enemy's traps. Our job is to stay free, and we do that through daily prayer, studying Scripture, and walking in obedience to God's Word.
Are You Truly Free Today?
You may live in the "land of the free," but are you truly free in your heart? Are you still carrying the heavy weight of sin, guilt, and disobedience?
If so, you can experience real independence today. You don't have to earn it, and you don't have to buy it—Jesus already paid the full price for your freedom with His life.
Let’s choose to walk boldly, love deeply, and celebrate our eternal freedom in Christ today!
