Our identity issues are often fundamental misunderstandings of who God is. We struggle with guilt because we misunderstand His grace, or control because we misunderstand His sovereignty. But when we let God be the loudest voice in our lives, we realize we aren’t just individuals wandering alone; we are cherished members of a divine household.
Adopted Into the Family
From the moment we accept Christ, we are adopted into His incredible family. This isn't just a metaphor; it's a spiritual reality that changes everything.
Romans 8:14-17 NIV [14] For those who are led by the Spirit of God are the children of God. [15] The Spirit you received does not make you slaves, so that you live in fear again; rather, the Spirit you received brought about your adoption to sonship. And by him we cry, “Abba, Father.” [16] The Spirit himself testifies with our spirit that we are God’s children. [17] Now if we are children, then we are heirs—heirs of God and co-heirs with Christ, if indeed we share in his sufferings in order that we may also share in his glory.
We are no longer orphans of the world, but children of the King. This adoption means we have an inheritance that is beyond measure. You are a co-heir with Christ, sharing in His glory and His promises right now.
Galatians 4:7 NIV So you are no longer a slave, but God’s child; and since you are his child, God has made you also an heir.(emphasis mine).
Who God Says You Are
Because you belong to Him, you can stand firm in these truths:
- You are a child of God
John 1:12-13 NIV[12] Yet to all who did receive him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God— [13] children born not of natural descent, nor of human decision or a husband’s will, but born of God.
- You are the apple of His eye
Psalms 17:8-9 NIV [8] Keep me as the apple of your eye; hide me in the shadow of your wings [9] from the wicked who are out to destroy me, from my mortal enemies who surround me.
- You are a new creation in Christ
2 Corinthians 5:17 NIV Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: The old has gone, the new is here!
- You are more than a conqueror
Romans 8:37-39 NIV [37] No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us. [38] For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, [39] neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.
God doesn’t love us because of who we are; He loves us because of who He is. He is Love.
1 John 4:7-12 NIV [7] Dear friends, let us love one another, for love comes from God. Everyone who loves has been born of God and knows God. [8] Whoever does not love does not know God, because God is love. [9] This is how God showed his love among us: He sent his one and only Son into the world that we might live through him. [10] This is love: not that we loved God, but that he loved us and sent his Son as an atoning sacrifice for our sins. [11] Dear friends, since God so loved us, we also ought to love one another. [12] No one has ever seen God; but if we love one another, God lives in us and his love is made complete in us. (emphasis mine)
When you succeed, He says, “I love you.” When you fail, He says, “I love you.” Love is His answer to everything.
A Community of Belonging
Being part of God's family also means an instant connection with other believers. We are brothers and sisters, bound by the same Spirit.
1 John 4:7 CEV My dear friends, we must love each other. Love comes from God, and when we love each other, it shows we have been given new life. We are now God's children, and we know him.
This family is a diverse body of faith that extends across the globe. God’s family on earth isn't perfect, yet we are still called to support one another and extend the grace we’ve been given. We’ve spent too much time listening to the voices of criticism and loneliness. It is time to return to the heart of the Father and listen to the voice that knit you together before you were even born.
Psalms 139:13 NIV For you created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother’s womb.
If you've been searching for a place to belong, know this: you already have one. You are deeply loved, fully accepted, and eternally connected to the most incredible family in the universe. Embrace this truth, live in its freedom, and share this glorious belonging with others.
