Why is this relationship the ultimate foundation? Because every other relationship flows from it, and without it, we risk building our lives on shifting sand.
The Source of All Love
To love others well, we must first understand true, unconditional love. This love originates with God, who demonstrated it perfectly by sending His Son. The Bible teaches us that God is love, and our relationship with Him is the wellspring from which we draw the capacity to love anyone else.
1 John 4:7-8 NLT [7] Dear friends, let us continue to love one another, for love comes from God. Anyone who loves is a child of God and knows God. [8] But anyone who does not love does not know God, for God is love.
When our foundation is secure in God's love, our human relationships become healthier, more resilient, and more gracious. We are less likely to seek from others what only God can provide: ultimate fulfillment, identity, and security.
Aligning Your Priorities
Focusing on your relationship with God isn't about neglecting others; it's about ordering your priorities correctly. Jesus himself was clear about the greatest commandment:
Matthew 22:37-39 NLT [37] Jesus replied, “‘You must love the Lord your God with all your heart, all your soul, and all your mind.’ [38] This is the first and greatest commandment. [39] A second is equally important: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’
Notice the sequence: first and greatest is love for God, and then love for neighbor. When we commit our heart, soul, and mind to Him, we become better neighbors, spouses, children, and friends. This divine alignment provides the compass for navigating the complexities and challenges of our human connections.
Building a Strong Foundation
The process of maintaining this vital relationship is not a one-time decision but a continuous journey of self-reflection and openness to God's guidance. It requires daily investment through prayer, reading scripture, and seeking to walk in obedience. When our relationship with God is strong, we gain the wisdom and discernment needed to approach all our other relationships with care.
Matthew 7:24-25 NLT [24] “Anyone who listens to my teaching and follows it is wise, like a person who builds a house on solid rock. [25] Though the rain comes in torrents and the floodwaters rise and the winds beat against that house, it won’t collapse because it is built on bedrock.
Make the commitment today to prioritize your most important relationship. Let your connection with God be the "rock" that provides stability, purpose, and genuine love, allowing you to be a careful, loving, and reliable person in every other relationship you have.
