Scripture is full of warnings against pride and exaltation of oneself.
Proverbs 16:18 NLT Pride goes before destruction, and haughtiness before a fall.
This timeless wisdom underscores the perilous nature of arrogance, suggesting it inevitably leads to downfall. Jesus himself, the ultimate example for Christians, consistently demonstrated humility.
John 13:4-5, 12-15 NLT [4] So he got up from the table, took off his robe, wrapped a towel around his waist, [5] and poured water into a basin. Then he began to wash the disciples’ feet, drying them with the towel he had around him.
[12] After washing their feet, he put on his robe again and sat down and asked, “Do you understand what I was doing? [13] You call me ‘Teacher’ and ‘Lord,’ and you are right, because that’s what I am. [14] And since I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you ought to wash each other’s feet. [15] I have given you an example to follow. Do as I have done to you.
Scripture clearly calls believers to a selfless orientation, which is the contrast of arrogance.
Philippians 2:3-4 NLT [3] Don’t be selfish; don’t try to impress others. Be humble, thinking of others as better than yourselves. [4] Don’t look out only for your own interests, but take an interest in others, too.
Furthermore, arrogance often breeds judgment and division, qualities that are contradictory to the Christian call for unity and love. When we elevate ourselves, we invariably look down on others, supporting an environment of criticism rather than compassion. A heart filled with arrogance struggles to extend grace and understanding, hindering the very essence of Christian fellowship.
Matthew 7:1-2 NLT [1] “Do not judge others, and you will not be judged. [2] For you will be treated as you treat others. The standard you use in judging is the standard by which you will be judged.
Cultivating humility, therefore, is paramount for those who seek to follow Christ. This involves recognizing our dependence on God, acknowledging our imperfections, and valuing others as equally created in His image.
Genesis 1:27 NLT[27] So God created human beings in his own image. In the image of God he created them; male and female he created them.
To embrace Christianity is to embrace a posture of humility, recognizing that true strength and worth come not from ourselves, but from God's grace and love.
James 4:5-6 NLT [5] Do you think the Scriptures have no meaning? They say that God is passionate that the spirit he has placed within us should be faithful to him. [6] And he gives grace generously. As the Scriptures say, “God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble.” (emphasis mine)
Let us continually examine our hearts, ensuring that arrogance finds no dwelling place within us, so that we may truly reflect the servant heart of Jesus Christ.
