Psalms 39:6 NIV Surely everyone goes around like a mere phantom; in vain they rush about, heaping up wealth without knowing whose it will finally be.
We are forced to ask ourselves a crucial question: What are we truly building our lives on?
A Rushing Shadow
The psalmist’s words paint a vivid picture of a life lived without God—a life of "rushing about" for things that don't last. We become like a "mere phantom" or a shadow, a temporary presence with no lasting substance. We pour our energy into accumulating wealth, status, or accomplishments, but these things offer no true security.
Matthew 6:19-21 NIV Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moths and vermin destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moths and vermin do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.
Our earthly busyness can distract us from what truly matters, which is our relationship with God. This can be especially deceptive when our busyness is ministry. We can get so caught up in the "doing"—serving on committees, organizing events, or leading groups—that the focus shifts from God Himself to the activities. Our pursuit can become about the stuff we do, rather than the God, we're doing it for. The danger lies in losing sight of the Lord while we're busy working for Him.
Aligning Our Priorities
Living a life that aligns with God’s will is not about having an empty schedule, but about a change in perspective. It's about recognizing that our time is a gift from God and should be used to honor Him.
Ephesians 5:15-20 NIV Be very careful, then, how you live—not as unwise but as wise, [16] making the most of every opportunity, because the days are evil. Therefore do not be foolish, but understand what the Lord’s will is. Do not get drunk on wine, which leads to debauchery. Instead, be filled with the Spirit, speaking to one another with psalms, hymns, and songs from the Spirit. Sing and make music from your heart to the Lord, always giving thanks to God the Father for everything, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.
This means being intentional with our time, making space for prayer, Bible study, and serving others. It's in these moments of stillness and surrender that we find true purpose, not in the relentless pursuit of more.
Finding Rest in Him
God doesn't want us to be perpetually exhausted. He offers us a place of rest.
Matthew 11:28-30 NIV “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. [30] For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.”
He isn’t telling us to abandon our responsibilities, but to find our strength and peace in Him first. This rest isn't just about sleep; it's a spiritual rest that comes from surrendering our anxieties and busyness to God. By putting our faith first and aligning our priorities with His will, we can break free from the phantom race of this world and live a life of meaning and purpose.
