The concept might sound contradictory, but it speaks to a lukewarm faith that the Bible warns against. We believe in God, but do we truly trust Him with everything? Do we seek His will above our own desires? Do our lives reflect a vibrant, active relationship with the Creator, or a comfortable, convenient adherence to religious practices?
Revelation 3:15-16 (NIV): "I know your deeds, that you are neither cold nor hot. I wish you were either one or the other! So, because you are lukewarm—neither hot nor cold—I am about to spit you out of my mouth."
This isn't a gentle rebuke; it's a stark warning about the danger of indifference. God desires a passionate, wholehearted devotion, not a half-hearted acknowledgment.
This isn't to say we'll never stumble or struggle. We are all on a continuous journey of faith, and maintaining a solid foundation and aligning our priorities with God's will is a lifelong process. It requires regular self-reflection and openness to God's guidance.
But if we are honest with ourselves, are there areas where our "belief" doesn't translate into "living out"? Do we worry excessively about things God has promised to provide for?
Matthew 6:25 NIV “Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothes?
Do we rely on our own understanding rather than trusting in His divine wisdom?
Proverbs 3:5-6 NIV [5] Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; [6] in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight.
Do we prioritize worldly success over seeking His Kingdom first?
Matthew 6:33 NIV But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.
Living as a "Christian atheist" can manifest in many ways:
- Procrastinating on spiritual growth: Knowing we should spend time in prayer or scripture but always finding excuses.
- Worrying more about earthly security than eternal reward: Investing heavily in temporal things while neglecting our spiritual inheritance.
- Seeking human approval over God's affirmation: Making decisions based on what others think, rather than what God desires.
- Allowing fear to dictate our actions: Doubting God's power and provision in challenging circumstances.
The good news is that recognizing this tendency is the first step towards a deeper, more authentic faith. God is a loving Father who desires to transform us from the inside out. He invites us to shed the complacency and truly surrender our lives to Him.
Hebrews 11:6 NIV And without faith it is impossible to please God, because anyone who comes to him must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who earnestly seek him.
t's not enough to simply believe He exists; we must believe that He is actively involved in our lives and that He rewards those who diligently seek Him and align with His will.
Let us examine our hearts today. Are we truly living as if God is real, powerful, and intimately involved in every aspect of our lives? Or are we, in subtle ways, practicing a form of Christian atheism? The journey to a robust faith is ongoing, but it begins with an honest assessment and a renewed commitment to align our entire being with God's perfect will.
