It's a question that echoes through time, particularly after a significant seismic event like the 8.8 magnitude earthquake near Russia on July 29th, 2025. I know for some, me included, it's easy to feel a familiar unease, especially when someone interprets every tremor, every conflict, every tragedy as an immediate sign of the "End Times." So, let's dive into what the Scriptures actually say about earthquakes and the return of Christ.
The modern world, with its instant news and global reach, often makes us feel like we're experiencing more disasters than ever before. After the devastating 2004 tsunami or the horrific quakes in Haiti and Chile, and now this powerful earthquake off the Kamchatka Peninsula, the question of "Are these the end times?" naturally arises. Many turn to the Book of Revelation, but the primary passage we should consider comes from Jesus Himself.
In Matthew 24, Mark 13, and Luke 21, Jesus' disciples ask Him about the signs of His coming and the end of the age. His response is crucial.
Mark 13:7-8 NIV "When you hear of wars and rumors of wars, do not be alarmed. Such things must happen, but the end is still to come. Nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. There will be earthquakes in various places, and famines. These are the beginning of birth pains."
Matthew 24:7-8 NIV "Nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. There will be famines and earthquakes in various places. All these are the beginning of birth pains."
Luke 21:11 NIV "There will be great earthquakes, famines and pestilences in various places, and fearful events and great signs from heaven."
Notice a critical phrase: "These are the beginning of birth pains."
This is paramount to understanding Jesus' message. Just as a woman experiences labor pains that increase in frequency and intensity as childbirth draws nearer, these signs – including earthquakes, wars, and famines – are meant to indicate that the "delivery" is approaching, but they don't signal the exact moment of Christ's return. They are reminders that we are moving toward the consummation of all things, not a specific countdown.
Jesus explicitly states that when we hear of these things, we are "not to be alarmed." Why? Because they are "the beginning," not the immediate end. The "end is still to come." This challenges a common misconception that every natural disaster or conflict is a direct, immediate indicator of Christ's return in that very moment.
Furthermore, consider other scriptures that speak to the timing of His return:
Matthew 24:36 NIV "But about that day or hour no one knows, not even the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father."
1 Thessalonians 5:2 NIV "For you yourselves know very well that the day of the Lord will come like a thief in the night."the Lord will come like a thief in the night." (emphasis mine)
Revelation 16:15 NIV "Look, I come like a thief! Blessed is the one who stays awake and keeps his clothes with him, so that he may not have to walk around naked and suffer shame."
These verses repeatedly emphasize the unexpected nature of Christ's return. If every major earthquake or war were a precise signal of His imminent arrival, it would contradict the very idea of Him coming "like a thief in the night."
While the Bible does speak of a great earthquake as part of the sixth seal in Revelation 6:12, and other seismic events during the tribulation, these are described as events within a specific prophetic timeline, not necessarily every single earthquake we experience today.
Revelation 6:12 NIV I watched as he opened the sixth seal. There was a great earthquake. The sun turned black like sackcloth made of goat hair, the whole moon turned blood red,
Revelation 8:5 NIV Then the angel took the censer, filled it with fire from the altar, and hurled it on the earth; and there came peals of thunder, rumblings, flashes of lightning and an earthquake.
Revelation 11:13, 19 NIV [13] At that very hour there was a severe earthquake and a tenth of the city collapsed. Seven thousand people were killed in the earthquake, and the survivors were terrified and gave glory to the God of heaven.
[19] Then God’s temple in heaven was opened, and within his temple was seen the ark of his covenant. And there came flashes of lightning, rumblings, peals of thunder, an earthquake and a severe hailstorm.
Revelation 16:18 NIV [18] Then there came flashes of lightning, rumblings, peals of thunder and a severe earthquake. No earthquake like it has ever occurred since mankind has been on earth, so tremendous was the quake.
So, are earthquakes a sign of the imminent return of Christ? They are indeed a sign that we are living in the "last days" – a period that began with Christ's first coming. They are part of the "birth pains" that remind us of God's redemptive plan unfolding. However, they are not meant to be a precise calendar or a cause for alarm that the very next moment, He will be here.
Instead, these events should serve as a powerful reminder for us to live with an eternal perspective, to examine the foundation of our faith, and to be ready, not out of fear, but out of faithful obedience and loving anticipation. It's a call to deepen our relationship with God, to align our priorities with His will, and to live each day in a way that honors Him, ready whenever He chooses to return.
