It costs us our self-reliance, our pride, our personal agendas, and sometimes even comfort, reputation, or relationships. Yet, every believer who walks this path discovers the exact same truth: it is all worth it.
Understanding the Cost of Discipleship
Jesus was remarkably honest about what it means to be His follower. He didn’t conceal the challenges or offer a comfortable, convenient faith.
“And whoever does not carry their cross and follow me cannot be my disciple. “Suppose one of you wants to build a tower. Won’t you first sit down and estimate the cost to see if you have enough money to complete it? ” - Luke 14:27-28 NIV
To "carry a cross" in the ancient world meant walking toward total surrender. Discipleship requires counting the cost upfront. Following Jesus means yielding our desire to be the author of our own lives. It means surrendering our plans to His sovereign will, choosing holiness over cultural convenience, and remaining faithful even when obedience comes with a price.
“Then Jesus said to his disciples, “Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me. For whoever wants to save their life will lose it, but whoever loses their life for me will find it. ” - Matthew 16:24-25 NIV
What Do We "Lose" When We Follow Him?
When we say the cost is high, what does that actually look like in our day-to-day lives?
- Self-Will: We trade our demand for control for trust in God’s sovereignty.
- Comfort & Approval: Standing for biblical truth may mean facing misunderstanding, opposition, or rejection from the world.
- Earthly Treasures: Our priorities shift from building temporary, earthly security to storing up treasure in heaven.
At first glance, this loss seems overwhelming. But the Bible reminds us that whatever we give up in pursuit of Christ is nothing compared to what we gain in return.
Why the Reward Far Outweighs the Cost
The cross is not the end of the story; it is the doorway to true life. What we lay down is temporal; what we receive in Christ is eternal.
Consider what Jesus promises to those who follow Him:
1. Eternal Life and Unshakable Peace
The world offers temporary happiness, but Christ offers enduring peace, deep-seated joy, and the gift of eternal life that no earthly trial can dismantle.
“The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full.” - John 10:10 NIV
2. The Surpassing Worth of Knowing Christ
The Apostle Paul sacrificed his status, comfort, and safety to preach the Gospel. Yet, writing from a prison cell, he declared:
“What is more, I consider everything a loss because of the surpassing worth of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord, for whose sake I have lost all things. I consider them garbage, that I may gain Christ ” - Philippians 3:8 NIV
When you taste the goodness, grace, and presence of Jesus, everything else pales in comparison.
“I consider that our present sufferings are not worth comparing with the glory that will be revealed in us. ” - Romans 8:18 NIV
The Hidden Paradox: The Cost of Not Following Jesus
While the cost of discipleship is high, the cost of non-discipleship is infinitely higher.
To turn away from Jesus means choosing a life without eternal hope, bearing the weight of our own sin, and chasing after worldly promises that ultimately fail to satisfy. Here’s a quote from Jim Elliot, the famous missionary, that says it all:
"He is no fool who gives what he cannot keep to gain what he cannot lose."
It’s All Worth It
Yes, following Jesus will cost you your old life. But in exchange, He gives you His life—filled with purpose, unwavering hope, divine peace, and an eternal inheritance.
Whatever sacrifice you are facing today, hold fast to the promises of God. Keep your eyes on Jesus, knowing that every step of faith, every act of obedience, and every surrendered plan is infinitely worth it.
