Maybe you were scrolling through social media, or maybe a friend shared some good news, and instead of feeling happy for them, something inside you tightened. A small voice whispered: “Why them and not me? They don't even deserve that. I've worked way harder.”
It’s easy to blame that feeling on external forces. We often tell ourselves it’s a spiritual attack from the Enemy, or we blame the other person for boasting. But if we’re truly honest with ourselves, that discontentment isn't coming from the outside—it’s coming from deep within our own hearts.
The Truth About Where Jealousy Begins
When we feel envious, what we’re really saying is that we aren't satisfied with what God has given us. We're subtly declaring that we deserve more than He has chosen to hand us right now. It’s an issue of discontentment. Jealousy is a desire of the sinful nature—the flesh—fighting against the Spirit.
Galatians 5:17-21 NIV For the flesh desires what is contrary to the Spirit, and the Spirit what is contrary to the flesh. They are in conflict with each other, so that you are not to do whatever you want. But if you are led by the Spirit, you are not under the law. The acts of the flesh are obvious: sexual immorality, impurity and debauchery; idolatry and witchcraft; hatred, discord, jealousy, fits of rage, selfish ambition, dissensions, factions [21] and envy; drunkenness, orgies, and the like. I warn you, as I did before, that those who live like this will not inherit the kingdom of God. (emphasis mine)
When we try to pass the blame onto someone else or call it a "spiritual attack," we avoid taking ownership. But real growth begins when we own our feelings, look objectively at our heart motives, and take responsibility.
The Test of True Trust
Want to see how much you really trust God? Take a close look at your gratitude when things don’t go your way, or when you can't have the things you want.
It’s easy to be thankful when blessings are pouring in. But trusting God’s sovereignty means resting in His promises even when we feel like we’re lacking.
Hebrews 13:5 NIV Keep your lives free from the love of money and be content with what you have, because God has said, “Never will I leave you; never will I forsake you.” (emphasis mine)
Contentment doesn't come from getting everything we desire. It comes from trusting that the God who holds the mountains and the seas in His hands is watching over us as the flock under His care.
Psalms 46:1-3 NIV God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble. Therefore we will not fear, though the earth give way and the mountains fall into the heart of the sea, though its waters roar and foam and the mountains quake with their surging.
He is enough.
Stripping Off the Old, Putting On the New
So how do we fix this? The beauty of the Gospel is that when we accept Jesus as our Lord and Savior, we aren't left to struggle in our old habits. We become brand-new people.
2 Corinthians 5:17 NIV Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: The old has gone, the new is here!
Strip off the old sinful nature and let the Spirit renew our thoughts and attitudes.
Ephesians 4:20-24 NIV That, however, is not the way of life you learned when you heard about Christ and were taught in him in accordance with the truth that is in Jesus. You were taught, with regard to your former way of life, to put off your old self, which is being corrupted by its deceitful desires; [23] to be made new in the attitude of your minds; and to put on the new self, created to be like God in true righteousness and holiness. (emphasis mine)
- Take off jealousy. Acknowledge it, bring it before God, and ask Him to cleanse your heart.
- Put on thanksgiving. Replace envy with praise for what God has already done for you through the gift of salvation and His everyday grace.
A Daily Prayer for Contentment
The next time you feel flustered, anxious, or envious of someone else’s path, pause. Don't let it turn into resentment or unhealthy competition. Take a breath, look to the Father, and pray this simple prayer:
"Lord, You are my source. I stop looking to the world for contentment, and I draw my satisfaction directly from You today."
Let’s choose gratitude over jealousy today.
