I received this comment on the post today:
"Thank you very much I am sixty five and I am terrified this is late in life to be able to become a Christian. I have read on people going to heaven and hell and come back with their story's of what happened to them as they were shown eternal hell and I'm absolutely terrified. I dont know what do and how to start and scared I will die and not be the best person I can in Gods eyes. I have done things in the past and still on medication from early years. I have prayed to God for the last five days please help me, thank you"
This post is my response to this reader:
It is completely understandable to feel overwhelmed and even terrified when facing the massive questions of faith, eternity, and where we stand with God. If you are carrying that weight right now, I want you to stop, take a deep breath, and let it out.
Let me reassure you with absolute certainty: You are not too late. Whether you are sixty-five, eighty, or anywhere in between, there is no expiration date on God’s grace.
If your heart is gripping onto fear—fear of the past, fear of judgment, or fear that you’ve missed your chance—let’s break those burdens down together. God wants to give you a simple, peaceful way to start this journey, completely free from terror.
1. The Clock Is Not Your Enemy
The belief that you’ve run out of time is a heavy falsehood, but it is entirely contrary to how God operates. Your age is not a limitation to the One who stands outside of time.
- The Eleventh Hour: In the Gospel of Matthew, Jesus shares a parable about a landowner who hires workers at various points throughout the day (Matthew 20). Some labor from sunrise, while others are brought in at the very last hour of the workday. Yet, when evening comes, every single one receives the exact same reward.
- A Lifetime in a Moment: Think of the thief on the cross next to Jesus. In the very final moments of his physical life, he turned and asked for mercy. Jesus didn’t tell him his time had run out; He said, "Today you will be with me in paradise."
God cares about the posture of your heart right now, not the number of pages left on your calendar. If you have found yourself reaching out to Him in prayer over the last few days, take comfort: that is a sure sign that God is already actively working in your life, gently drawing you close.
2. Quiet the Fear and Cover the Past
It is easy to become paralyzed by dramatic or frightening stories about the afterlife. But the true foundation of the Christian faith is not terror—it is profound love, grace, and mercy.
- Your Past is Handled: You may have things in your history you aren't proud of, or perhaps you deal with ongoing health challenges and take daily medications. Please know that God does not view your medical history or your past missteps as roadblocks. Christianity is not an exclusive club for perfect people; it is a hospital for those who want to heal.
- The Free Gift of Grace: You do not have to "earn" your way into God's presence by achieving perfection on your own strength—none of us can. Salvation is a gift freely given. Romans 10:13 tells us plainly: "Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved." It does not say "everyone with a flawless record."
3. A Simple, Step-by-Step Way to Begin
Following God doesn't require a complicated checklist or a lifetime of theological training. You can begin a walking relationship with Him today, simply and peacefully:
Step 1: Speak to God Simply
Prayer is just a conversation with a Father who loves you. Find a quiet, comfortable space and say something like this from the depth of your heart:
"God, I am tired of being afraid. I know I’ve made mistakes in my life, and I ask for your forgiveness. I believe Jesus loves me and died for me. Right now, I open my heart to you. Please give me your peace, take away my fear, and guide my steps. Amen."
Step 2: Focus on God's True Character
Instead of consuming stories that steal your peace, fill your mind with the truth of who God is. Open a Bible and spend time in the Gospel of John or the Psalms. These pages are overflowing with God's comfort, protection, and deep affection for His children.
Step 3: Take It One Day at a Time
You don’t have to figure out the rest of eternity by tomorrow morning. Just focus on today. Keep talking to God like a trusted friend. Pour out your anxieties, your hopes, and your desire to know Him better.
A Note on Total Well-being: As a brief reminder, please continue to take any prescribed medications exactly as directed by your healthcare providers. Taking care of your mental and physical health is a vital part of honoring the life God gave you. Being on medication will never separate you from the love of God.
If you are feeling a tug on your heart, you are answering a beautiful, sacred invitation. Take comfort in knowing that you are safe, you are profoundly loved, and you are exactly where you need to be. The best part of your journey is just beginning.
